In 2023, Ramee of R Design Studio shared a plan for her own basement home office renovation. The proposed layout featured an L-shaped desk where a laptop and monitor would face a solid wall. A small basement window was positioned above and to her right, keeping the room entrance in her peripheral view. An additional work surface was included for drawings and paperwork. This concept set the intended window-to-screen orientation before construction concluded.

The Completed Room

The finished space closely followed that original intent. Ramee confirmed she faces the wall while working, appreciating the proximity of the window. She noted that the single small window did not provide enough natural light for live plants, leading her to use faux greenery instead.

Retail Guidance Versus Built Reality

Retailers like IKEA US generally advise placing a computer at a 90-degree angle to a window to manage reflections.

Applying This to Your Own Space

Sketching your window position, screen direction, and seating spot clarifies a room's layout. Checking the screen at different times of day shows how sunlight interacts with the space, guiding adjustments to shades, desk placement, or screen angle based on actual conditions rather than fixed rules. Remember that camera framing for virtual meetings involves different considerations than physical window orientation; our guide on arranging a video call backdrop explores those visual elements separately.
