Understanding Base Footprint
When selecting an articulated lamp for an independent home workspace, the first physical constraint is the base footprint. For example, the Artemide Tolomeo Micro Table base version datasheet lists a 170mm base diameter. This describes the circular area the base occupies on a flat surface and does not apply to clamp or desk-fixed variants, which have entirely different mounting footprints. Before purchasing or placing any articulated lamp, mark the actual base circle on the intended desk spot using a paper template. This simple step reveals whether the fixture fits within the available zone without encroaching on other equipment.
Interpreting Maximum Extension
Articulated arms introduce variables that static fixtures do not. The same datasheet specifies a 690mm maximum extension length and a 730mm maximum extension height. These are measurements of the lamp structure when fully stretched, not descriptions of a guaranteed illumination zone. The 690mm maximum extension length is a linear dimension of the arm and shade assembly at its furthest reach. It does not mean every articulated position traces that exact path, nor does it define the boundaries of light falling on a desk. A spec-sheet maximum is strictly a dimension of the physical object.
Mapping the Shared Workspace
On a shared desk or compact shelf, comparing the lamp's maximum extension to the task area requires manual verification. Check the full range of motion against existing objects. Does the shade path intersect with a monitor edge? Does the arm swing into the zone described in our guide to headphone desk shelf arrangements? Will the cable route tangle with other peripherals when the arm folds back? These spatial questions matter more than the raw numbers on a page. Additionally, consider how the lamp sits relative to ambient light sources, keeping in mind the spatial dynamics discussed in our notes on window facing screen placement. The physical dimensions of the lamp interact with the room layout regardless of where natural light enters.
